Thirty Years of Observing China: Material and Value Changes

Scott Wilson is the Alfred W. Negley Professor and Chair of the Politics Department at The University of the South. In the United States he teaches courses on Chinese society, globalization, and political economy. His interest in China was piqued when he studied at Nanjing University in 1985. Since that time, he has lived in China for more than six years, conducting research on Chinese political economy and legal development. Wilson’s research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright Commission, the Committee for Scholarly Communication with China, the U.S.-Japan Friendship Commission, and the Appalachian College Association. He is the author of a book on foreign investment in China, titled Remade in China (Oxford University Press, 2009), as well as several journal articles and book chapters. In March 2015, he published his second book on China, titled Tigers Without Teeth: The Pursuit of Justice in Contemporary China (Rowman and Littlefield, 2015). During the year 2014-15, Wilson is researching Chinese environmental policy and citizen participation at Wuhan University’s Environmental Law Institute.
讲座简介:
The lecture begins with a presentation of modernization, globalization, and cultural (path dependence) theories and how they explain value change. Next, I present personal observations and survey results related to Chinese values on family, personal relations, gender relations, the environment, sources of security and insecurity, and the search for meaning. The lecture reflects on how China's rapid modernization and globalization have shaped new value structures in China.
