Introduction

School of Government (SOG) of Sun Yat-sen University was founded on September 30, 2001 in Guangzhou, China. Its origin dates back to 1905 when Guangdong College of Law and Administration (法政学堂 Fazheng xuetang) was established. Now, over 100 years of development, SOG has become one of the leading schools in disciplines of political science and public administration in China. Holding values of equality, mutual respect and cooperation to bear fruits, SOG takes on a mission to pursue good governance in China and the world beyond by continuously injecting new energy to traditional studies for good governance and staying at forefronts of academic research, professional training and social service.

SOG boasts a dynamic and international faculty team with diverse academic research backgrounds, including recipients of prestigious national prizes and members of distinguished national academic associations. Over 90% of the faculty have overseas educational or visiting experiences, and some of them are from German, Italy and other countries.

SOG aims to develop innovators with theoretical knowledge of political science and public administration and leaders with professional practices of governance. With  two academic departments of political science and public administration, SOG offers diversified programs in these two fields for bachelors, masters and doctors. It also provides professional programs such as MPA, Ed.M and MPA-CGDC (the one-year Master of Public Administration in Chinese Governance for Developing Countries). Sun Yat-sen University is the only one in the first batch to attain the permission of student recruitment in South China since 2001.

SOG has made a large number of achievements in fields of public administration and political science, covering areas of public management theory and practice, public budgeting and financial management, social policy and social security, urban governance, digital governance, food safety, anti-corruption studies, justice theory, citizenship and state building, politics and governance in Hong Kong and Macao, studies on people’s congress, labor relations, relationship between politics and business, local politics and governance, and domestic intergovernmental relations.

SOG has developed a broad cooperation network with international universities and institutions in Asia, Oceania, North America, Europe, South America and Africa. Collaborative projects include joint-degree programs, short-term exchange programs, international summer schools, course collaboration projects, visiting scholar programs, collaborative research, etc.
